The rocky point at the mouth of the Temperance River in the Lower Campground

The entrance to the Lower Campground is at the end of the turnout parking lot immediately before crossing over the Temperance River from the south. It could be easily missed as one approaches the hub of activity, as pedestrians park and walk to enjoy the incredible views of the river gorge from the highway bridge. However, once you enter this campground area you may quickly understand why it was my preferred section for camping. The campsites are approached by a drive right along the shoreline that provides an inviting vista out to the southern horizon of Lake Superior.

A grassy strip between the roadway and the shoreline is the campground’s picnic area. It also parallels a sandy beach—ideal for launching kayaks. The rocky walls of the mouth of the Temperance River provide an inspiring backdrop where the river empties into the lake.

Campsites 40–44 are right alongside the road, across from the open shoreline, making them totally exposed to both campground foot and vehicle traffic and totally unprotected against any weather approaching off the lake. These are small sites, especially well suited for canoeists and kayakers who simply need a land base to pitch a tent and regroup, practically at the water’s edge. The rest of the sites are very close to the road as well and rank low on the privacy scale. Sites 52 and 55 are only slightly more hidden by understory. Several footpaths that lead to the lake cut through the campground at several points between the campsites. Visitors can enjoy the Temperance River from several vantage points accessible by hiking trails along both sides of the gorge; from the walkway along the bridge over the gorge; or from access trails in each of the two campgrounds. Trails along the river are segments of the Superior Hiking Trail that runs along the entire North Shore. Coupled with those and other hiking options, campers can fish for trout stocked in the Temperance River. As part of a segment of the Lake Superior Water Trail, you can enjoy paddling along the shoreline of the greatest of the Great Lakes. There is also a motorboat access about a mile south in the town of Schroeder.

The Temperance River is among a half dozen major waterfall attractions along the North Shore. At about the midpoint between Duluth and the Canadian border, its choice location puts it at less than an hour’s drive from all the key natural and historic features along the famous North Shore Drive.
